Unsheathing a Tradition in Cincy

Rose Lavalle comes home and does her best Arthur Pendragon immitation.

FC Cincinnati has their own pre-game tradition to start a match, pulling a sword from a stone.

Here, iconic footballer Rose Lavelle (Cincinnati native and USWNT star) did the honors.

Rose Lavelle has a sword now.

There’s just no other way to put it: the U.S. women’s national team midfielder is now also a person who has a sword.

Lavelle came into possession of what Pro Soccer Wire assumes is her first sword at TQL Stadium, where she was the guest of honor as FC Cincinnati defeated the Philadelphia Union with a dramatic late goal in the MLS playoffs.

A Cincinnati native, Lavelle has long vouched for her hometown: Skyline chili, Graeter’s ice cream, and the local malls and highways have no more famous defender than the USWNT and OL Reign playmaker. The city loves her back, with a local artist painting a Lavelle mural before her star turn at the 2019 World Cup. FC Cincinnati had Lavelle provide the voiceover for a hype video released in the hours before the match kicked off.

However, this mutual affection has never quite amounted to a sword, which to reiterate: Rose Lavelle has a sword.  (prosoccerwire.com)
