A Storybook Season for the CLE Hot Dogs

Guardians creative use of short and long term story telling creates a winning moment for their season finale Hot Dog Derby race.

Like most teams, the Cleveland Guardians host a live race in game. However they have been using the madcap race to tell a season-long story and create added value to the team with the their three popular Hot Dog characters.

This season-finally was a Dallas “Who Shot JR” level cliffhanger (for those of you old enough to know the reference).  Ketchup and Mustard were tiedm with Onion holding out hope to force a 3-way tie.

The race started with the season series coming down to the last home game to determine the overall winner.  Mustard edged to the lead and looked like he would take home the Championship Belt for 2023… until a shocking turn of events.

So who was this mystery man in a hoodie?

Andre Knott, the popular Bally Sports In-Game reporter for the Cleveland Guardians.  He and Mustard have been embroiled in a multi-year (playful) feud.  This was Andre’s coup de gras move, costing Mustard and entire season’s championship with one stiff forearm.

Andre is by far the most loved and revered graduate of Akron St. Vincent-St. Mary High School in Akron. He was an All-Ohio running back and four-time letter winner in baseball at St Vincent-St. Mary, earning SVSM Hall of Fame induction honors in 2018.  Her also attended Kent State University.  For all his accomplishments, besting Mustard in 2023 is likely his highest honor to date.  He now is a on-field reporter for the Guardians with a great command of the game and endearing relationships with the players and community.

The crowd reaction to clothesline on Mustard was big, but immediately topped when Andre was revealed to the be the attacker.  Fans loved the long-storyline arc and the defined characters.

Of course the fall out from the feud rolls on in the off-season on social media.

Overall, a lesson in both short and long-term storytelling. And a showcase of what’s possible when you build a roster of defined characters in your show.
