Bob’s Your Uncle
The Norfolk Admirals have a catchy promotion for a Self Storage business partner.
The Norfolk Admirals and Uncle Bob’s Self Storage are teaming up to find out who is the best uncle around in the Uncle of the Year contest. Admirals fans are encouraged to nominate their favorite uncles by filling out the below form. The winning contestant will receive an Uncle Bob’s Self Storage prize package. (team site)
The origins (of the slang term, not the storage unit) is not 100% clear, but it’s a nice use of the phrase that playfully connects the Storage Unit to the contest in a memorable way. Here are a couple explanations for the slang.
Bob’s your uncle - This is a well used phrase. It is added to the end of sentences a bit like and that’s it! For example if you are telling someone how to make that fabulous banoffee pie you just served them, you would tell them to boil the condensed milk for three hours, spread it onto a basic cheesecake base, slice bananas on top, add some whipped double cream, another layer of banana and Bob’s your uncle! (Effingpot)
This is a catchphrase which seemed to arise out of nowhere and yet has had a long period of fashion and is still going strong. It’s known mainly in Britain and Commonwealth countries, and is really a kind of interjection. It’s used to show how simple it is to do something: “You put the plug in here, press that switch, and Bob’s your uncle!”. (World Wide Words)
Nice use of Twitter as well to promote this promotion.
