CHICAGO — The White Sox will start weeknight home games at 7:11 p.m. as part of a sponsorship deal with the 7-Eleven convenience store chain.
White Sox spokesman Scott Reifert would not disclose the value of the three-year deal with the Dallas company Wednesday but said the revenue probably will be reinvested in the team or ballpark.
The new start time hardly represents a significant change since many weeknight games at U.S. Cellular Field already start at 7:07 p.m.
“We’re just talking about four minutes, so it’s not much of an inconvenience for the fans,” Reifert said.
Margaret Chabris, a spokeswoman 7-Eleven, said the company has been trying to develop sponsorships with other teams and entertainment venues. The Chicago area was targeted because of its more than 180 7-Eleven stores.
“Every time the media announces the game’s start time it will be a gentle reminder of our sponsorship,” Chabris said. (from ESPN)
A smart sponsor program that has been around sports for about as long as Slurpies. I was a bit surpirsed that the story was covered (by the media, team, and sponsor) as a new idea.

Friday night I saw a live performance at the Cleveland Playhouse Square Center of David Sedaris. Sedaris is one of my favorite writers and a frequent contributor to NPR, Esquire and the New Yorker. Profound, funny, poignant and always entertaining, Sedaris also reminded me that you don’t always need pyrotechnics, gobo lights and thumping bass to entertain your crowd.
Of course there are some differences to the crowds at the local theatre and a typical sports fan, but in the end your goal is the same: Entertain them enough to want to pay to see you. (more…)

Best Act
The touring act or halftime show that excels in providing quality entertainment for your fans. Consider drawing power, quality, cooperation of the act, media, and value. All touring acts and non-team affiliated shows and performers are considered.
Last year’s winners were:
Winner: Bucket Boys
Chicago’s Bucket Boys edge the competition by being a fresh, flexible, high-energy act.
Honorable Mention:
Notes:
It seems we get the same list of names every year, as it continues to be difficult to create and establish new successful acts. The NBA and NFL continued to reach out to big name music acts, however the success has been limited and the more traditional acts continue to impress the fans and staffs of most teams.

The Spirit were highlighted on the Colbert Report last night! The Report showed footage from the unveiling ceremony of the newest Spirit mascot, Steagle Colbeagle the Eagle. The segment also showcased the Ontario Hockey League and the two upcoming Spirit home games against the Ottawa 67s and the Sudbury Wolves. At the end of the show the host, Stephen Colbert, retired his Spirit jersey and raised it to the rafters of his studio.
“We are proud of our accident prone new mini mascot, Steagle Colbeagle the Eagle, as he made his international television debut last night. As Stephen Colbert raised his Spirit Jersey to the rafters of his studio, he officially became the 1st Spirit to do so”, stated Spirit Managing Partner Craig Goslin, ” The community of mid Michigan is quickly being transformed into raving Stephen Colbert fans. Stay tuned for future updates on both the Colbert Report and the Saginaw Spirit hockey games played at the Dow Event Center. The staff from the Saginaw Spirit are working in unison with the staff from the Colbert Report to continue the fun regarding our new feathered friend STEAGLE COLBEAGLE THE EAGLE.”
Watching the mini mascot’s (who was about as famous as the The Chicken before it hatched) debut was a laugh-out-loud moment. And the inclusion of a Colbert video to introduce was a great touch by the team. The Spirit have benefited from Colbert’s hysterical hyper-self promotion with their new character and it will be interesting if Colbert continues to track the process of his namesake, like the eagle chick Steven Jr. in San Diego.
